How to write a fundraising story that converts
Why your story matters
Donors give to people, not abstract causes. Within 10 seconds of landing on your page, supporters look for authenticity, clear costs, and genuine urgency.
The 5 part story structure
1. The Hook (First 2 Sentences)
Start directly with the core event or urgent need. Avoid long background intros.
Example
"On Tuesday morning, my brother suffered a sudden health emergency requiring urgent surgery at LUTH."
2. The Human Context
Introduce yourself or the beneficiary as a person with goals, family, and community impact, not just a financial need.
3. Transparent Cost Breakdown
Be specific about what the money covers. Itemised costs build instant credibility.
- Emergency surgery and hospital stay₦1,800,000
- Post operation medication and recovery₦450,000
- Total immediate target₦2,250,000
4. The Stakes
Explain what happens when the goal is reached versus what happens if treatment is delayed. Urgency encourages prompt giving.
5. The Direct Ask
End with a confident, clear call to action asking supporters to donate or share the link.
4 Common mistakes to avoid
- Being vague: Asking for general help without itemised numbers lowers donor confidence.
- Writing long text blocks: Use short paragraphs and bold text for easy skimming.
- Hiding medical or cost proof: Attach receipts or medical documents where appropriate.
- Apologising for asking: Confidence inspires trust. Express gratitude instead of hesitation.
